Classroom course at South Kensington Campus
COURSE NOT RUNNNIG THIS TERM
For anyone interested in art, art history, Victorian history, Victorian society, womens history, the Pre-Raphaelites
The 鈥楶re-Raphaelite Brotherhood鈥 was founded in 1848 by a small group of English painters, poets and critics. It rejected classicism and called for a radically new art that, as its name suggests, looked back to the time before Raphael.
Despite its exclusive beginnings, the movement grew to encompass a dizzying array of members and became one of the most important artistic movements in the Victorian period. It is only in the past few decades, however, that the role of women artists in the movement has been fully explored.
This exciting course looks at the vital contribution of women to the Pre-Raphaelite movement. Women played an active role throughout the many phases of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, as artistic pioneers, models and muses. Across ten weeks, we will explore the careers of female artists as well as their representation, tracing communities and friendships often forged in the face of hostile criticism. At a time when ideas about womanhood and femininity were rapidly shifting, Pre-Raphaelite women were at the forefront of social change.
During the course we will look at the work of more well-known Pre-Raphaelites such as Elizabeth Siddall, Jane Morris and Julia Margaret Cameron, as well as lesser-known figures such as Joanna Boyce, Emma Sandys and Eleanor Fortescue-Brickdale. We will look at how their lives and careers were shaped by concerns over the place of women at home and in the world, and how these experiences intersected with issues of gender, sexuality, race and class.
The aim of the course is to provide an overview of the Pre-Raphaelite movement through a study of women artists and models, and to provide in-depth case studies of major figures and artworks. No previous knowledge of art history is necessary and the content will be equally accessible to both those new to the subject and those with more experience. The course is organised to encourage discussion and debate, while also allowing us to explore the history of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, and the ideas and influences behind the work of the artists of this period.
鈥業t is a matter of writing a wholly new, and different story about Pre-Raphaelitism 鈥 a story in which the activities of women are no longer incidental, but necessary to the plot鈥 鈥 Elizabeth Prettejohn in The Art of the Pre-Raphaelites
