Drawing at the British Museum, Tate Library, Windsor Castle and the V&A
Tutor: Marianne Walker
On site course at London museums
COURSE NOT RUNNING THIS TERM
You should have some previous experience of drawing, but you do not have to be an expert or a trained artist
The British Museum, the Tate Library, the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle, and the Victoria and Albert Museum have some of the most spectacular works of art in their collections, and on this four-session course we invite you to spend time with the artist Marianne Walker drawing from these great artefacts.
This summer term we will visit some of the country's most prestigious museum collections (Ithell Colquhoun and British Museum) and drawing collections (Windsor Castle and the V&A) in order to make pencil studies from the works on display.
- The British Museum Egypt and Sudan study room will have some ancient Egyptian sculptures of heads for us to draw from, selected by the experts in that department;
- The Tate Library has the archive of the British Surrealist Ithell Colquhoun. This will be a very rare opportunity to make drawings copying from her works;
- Windsor Castle will have a focus on Da Vinci and Holbein plus other renaissance masters which are the strength in their collection;
- The V&A will have works by John Martin, Ingres, Whistler, Landseer and Constable.
You do not have to have experience of drawing to take part in the class, but this course is primarily aimed at people who have some experience of drawing, even if only a beginner's level, and would like to work with Marianne and these astonishing collections, on improving your drawing skills.
Numbers on this course are very strictly limited, with no more than nine people able to sign up due to security restrictions on accessing the collections. Due to the required security checks for Windsor Castle the deadline for enrolment is 21st April 2023, and because of the very low numbers we suggest early enrolment.
Fee does not include transport, art materials or lunch.

Marianne Walker is a London-based artist who gained an MA in Sculpture from Wimbledon College of Art in 2002 and received the Observer Magazine New British Artist Award for her final exhibition, a pencil drawn installation.
Marianne sees her practice as sitting right on the cusp between drawing and sculpture. She is always attempting to draw across three dimensions, to bring the drawn mark into the real world. To date she has made drawings into films and installations as well as more traditional works on paper.
Marianne is an experienced adult education tutor, with expertise not only in face-to-face teaching but the world of online learning in art.
