COURSE NOT RUNNING THIS TERM

For beginners in drawing and the more experienced

Although we might think of the world's great museums being the home to some of the most beautiful paintings, sculptures, ceramics and other objects ever created, it can be easy to forget that places like the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Museum also hold spectacular works of architecture in their collections.

Some of these are parts of actual buildings acquired by the museums, such as the Temple of Artemis from Ephesus at the British Museum, while others are reproductions, made in the nineteenth century, such as the Cast Court collection in the Victoria and Albert Museum.

On this three-session course we invite you to spend time with the artist Sam van Strien learning to draw from these great works of architecture. By drawing the buildings (or their cast facsimiles), we will discover some astonishing examples of historical architecture through the medium of drawing.

The collections we will be visiting are those at the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum, and some of the objects we will draw will include a life-sized cast of Trajan’s Column from Rome, and the Portico de la Gloria from the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Spain, as well as fragments from the Temple of Apollo at Bassae.

You do not have to have experience of architectural drawing to take part in the class. The course is for anyone who would like to work with Sam at these astonishing architectural collections, on improving their drawing skills.

Fee does not include transport, art materials or lunch.
