Welcome to the Metaverse: An Introduction to the Future
Thursdays 18:00 - 20:00
Tutor: Dr Tatiana Codreanu
Classroom course at South Kensington
Starts: 4 May 2023 - 10 weeks
For anyone interested in the future of the internet as a business tool, the development of AI and computer technology and their impact on society
Over the past five years, the idea of the metaverse has taken off in academia, business, the arts, computing and more, and today it is a word that finds its way into a sometimes bewildering range of different news stories and articles. But what is the metaverse and why should it matter to you?
The term metaverse was first used in 1992 by Neal Stephenson in his science-fiction novel Snow Crash. Stephenson described the metaverse as an alternative digital reality in which people interact, sometimes as they do in the real world, and sometimes in new and extraordinary ways.
Another way of describing the metaverse is as a virtual shared space created by the fusing of the physical and virtual worlds. But it is a concept that is evolving fast, especially with the development of new technologies such as AI, and it presents a wide range of opportunities for professionals in almost every field of human activity, including education, entertainment and business, to expand and develop their work.
On this ten week course, led by Dr Tatiana Codreanu, we will be introduced to the metaverse, exploring its history, development and current state, as well as opportunities for the future. We will look at the cultural and social dynamics of the metaverse, including issues related to identity, community, and representation, and how the metaverse can be used in our own areas of interest to advance and improve what we do.
Enlightening, extraordinary and enjoyable, this voyage of discovery into the metaverse is open to all and no previous experience of the subject or educational qualifications are needed to join us.
