Pitt - Untrustworthy AI

A Centre for Complexity Science Seminar.

This talk is divided into two sides: the dark side and the less dark side.

On the dark side, we consider the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the Digital Transformation, and observe聽that despite the plethora [sic] of ethical guidelines, design methodologies, international聽standards, and even international regulation, AI is still being used, and is going to be used,聽as a tool for abstracted power and abnegated responsibility. It will consider a range of聽threats in the form of 鈥淯ntrustworthy AI鈥, which can potentially bringing about democratic聽backsliding, or a kind of 鈥渄igital feudalism鈥, and even diminish the very essence of 鈥渂eing聽丑耻尘补苍鈥.

Then, on the less dark side, we discuss our attempts to offer an alternative approach, including modelling work that connects insights from political science with algorithms from computer聽science to address contemporary political challenges, a methodology for operationalising socio-technical聽systems in the public interest, and technology for ethical platformisation and social re-empowerment.
