Freezing-in temperatures of oxygen, carbon and iron in magnetic clouds

    , Pages: 759-762, ISSN: 0379-6566

Magnetic clouds (MCs) represent nearly one third of all the interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) seen by Ulysses. The ionization level of the solar wind plasma serves as a robust tool to characterize different types of solar wind. Charge states of heavy ions have been used in this work to infer the temperatures in the source region of ICMEs. MCs show increased temperatures with respect to non-cloud ICMEs and surrounding solar wind. Oxygen ions are found to provide a very good signature of magnetic clouds in the solar wind. The profiles of oxygen, carbon and iron are compared, in order to establish relations between them; inside MCs and in their surrounding solar wind.

The Jupiter system is a source of collimated burst-like streams of electrically charged 10-nm dust particles. In 2004 the Ulysses spacecraft had its second flyby at Jupiter and from late 2002 to early 2005 it measured a total of 24 dust streams between 0.8 and 3.4 AU from the planet. The grains show strong coupling to the interplanetary magnetic field: their impact directions correlate with the orientation and strength of the interplanetary magnetic field vector (namely its tangential and radial components) and they occur at 26 day intervals, closely matching the solar rotation period. Ulysses measured the dust streams over a large range in jovian latitude (+75° to -35°). Enhanced dust emission was measured along the jovian equator. © American Institute of Physics 2005.
