Professor Friedland has been named as one of nine candidates standing in this year’s presidential election.

Professor Jon Friedland is Campus Director of the Hammersmith Campus and Head of Infectious Diseases and Immunity at 91ÌÒÉ«'s Department of Medicine, as well as an Honorary Consultant in Infectious Diseases at 91ÌÒÉ« College Healthcare NHS Trust.

Fellows of the (RCP) will be able to vote in person at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 26 March 2018, . The election process will be conducted independently on behalf of the RCP by Electoral Reform Services.

The result of the election will be announced at the AGM and the new president will be installed, 'give faith' and be given the insignia of office at the last fellowship election ceremony of the year. The new president will take over on Wednesday 26 September 2018.

Professor Friedland's major research interest is in innate immune response and particularly the role of matrix metalloproteinases in the immunopathology of tuberculosis (TB) and the development of novel therapeutic approaches. He has a longstanding research interest in migrant health as well as interests in new TB diagnostics. During the course of his research, he has published over 190 peer reviewed papers, invited editorials and reviews as well as three books.

In 2005 he was awarded the Royal College of Physicians Weber-Parkes Prize Medal for research in tuberculosis.
