BSc Pharmacology

Why did you choose this Pathway of the MBBS?

I chose Pharmacology after hearing from students in older cohorts that it is a well-supported BSc with clear and constructive assessment feedback, which I found reassuring. I was also drawn to the breadth of the subject, as it applies to many areas of medicine. I felt that the knowledge gained would be relevant across a wide range of specialties I might pursue in the future. Additionally, the variety of research projects offered in Term 3 appealed to me, as it allowed for flexibility in choosing a topic of interest.

What was your favourite part of the course?

My favourite aspects of the course were the lab sessions with Dr Varela Carver and my Data Analysis project, both of which I found engaging and rewarding. The social side of the course was also a highlight, particularly the Christmas dinner!

What was the topic of your research project?

My research project was a cohort series investigating the efficacy of cannabis in managing Complex Regional Pain Syndrome.

How do you feel the programme will impact the following years of your MBBS?

The programme has strengthened my ability to interpret medical literature and has made it much easier for me to understand the mechanisms of action of medications. This has already been particularly helpful in Pathology and will continue to support my learning in future clinical years.

Do you have any words of advice to students trying to decide which BSc pathway to join?

I would advise students not to focus too heavily on which BSc might “look better” for their portfolio. What matters most is how well you engage with the year, reflect on your experiences, and articulate what you have learned. All BSc pathways are structured in a broadly similar way, so it’s more important to choose one that aligns with your interests and priorities at the time. For me, that meant selecting a course with strong support and feedback, which helped me develop my scientific literacy and work towards a strong overall result.
