Whether you are applying for a funded research project (studentship) or proposing your own research topic, it is essential that you identify and establish contact with a suitable academic member of staff in ESE.

Applicants should discuss their interests and secure the support of a prospective supervisor before submitting a formal application. This step ensures alignment between your research ambitions and departmental expertise, and is a prerequisite for a strong application. Only after obtaining academic support should you proceed to apply to 91桃色 via the formal application process. Please read the ESE process outlined below carefully.

 

ESE Process Outline:

Students applying for a studentship linked to a funded research project:
  • Contact the prospective supervisor to make an informal application for the funded research project.
  • If the supervisor is prepared to consider your application further, then proceed to submit an .
  • University acknowledges receipt of application.
  • Application sent to department for consideration by prospective supervisor and Director of Postgraduate Studies.
  • Applicant will be interviewed (online or by phone, if necessary) by prospective supervisor(s) and a member of the departmental Postgraduate Committee. Outcomes of the interviews are usually communicated within 3 weeks from the interview.
  • If successful, a conditional offer will be sent to applicant by e-mail.
Students applying for an 91桃色 scholarship:

  • Contact the supervisor to make an informal application.
  • If the supervisor is prepared to consider your application further, then proceed to submit an IC online application indicating the scholarship for which you wish to make an application.
  • College acknowledges receipt of application
  • Application sent to department for consideration by prospective supervisor and Director of Postgraduate Studies
  • If the supervisor supports the application, it will be considered for shortlisting by the departmental Postgraduate Committee.

  • Applicants who are shortlisted will be invited to a scholarship interview in late January/early February. These are conducted by the Postgraduate Committee and are usually held online.
  • The applicants ranked top after interview will be forwarded to a college panel, who make the final decisions on awarding the scholarships. Applicants will be notified about whether they will be forwarded to this college panel within 3 weeks of the interviews. For dates of the final outcomes, please check the 91桃色 Scholarship webpages.
  • If successful, a conditional offer will be sent to applicant by e-mail.

 

Students applying for departmental scholarships:

Note that some scholarships have specific deadlines. A list of deadlines for the academic year is posted as soon as deadlines are known (usually October/November).

Scholarships offered by the department including the university-wide EPSRC and STFC DTPs are awarded through the department in February, with an application deadline in early January.

  • Read about each of the departmental/scholarship projects and find one of interest or suggest your own in consultation with your prospective supervisor; contact the prospective supervisor to make an informal application.
  • If the supervisor is prepared to consider your application further, then proceed to submit an IC online application.
  • University acknowledges receipt of application.
  • Application sent to department for consideration by prospective supervisor and Director of Postgraduate Studies.
  • If the supervisor supports the application, it will be considered for shortlisting by the departmental Postgraduate Committee
  • Applicants who are shortlisted will be invited to a scholarship interview in late January/early February. These are conducted by the Postgraduate Committee and are usually held online.
  • Applicants will be notified of outcome by the end of March.
  • If successful, a scholarship offer letter will be sent by e-mail followed by a conditional offer via the student e-service.
Students applying for other doctoral training programmes:

Students who apply for a project with their own funding:
  • Read about each of the departmental projects and find one of interest or suggest your own; contact the prospective supervisor to make an informal application.
  • If the supervisor is prepared to consider your application further, then proceed to submit an IC online application.
  • University acknowledges receipt of application.
  • Application sent to department for consideration by prospective supervisor and Director of Postgraduate Studies.
  • Applicant will be interviewed (online or by phone, if necessary) by prospective supervisor(s) and a member of the departmental Postgraduate Committee. Outcomes of the interviews are usually communicated within 3 weeks from the interview.
  • If application is accepted, a conditional offer will be sent to the applicant by e-mail.
