The mission of the Department of Brain Sciences is to develop and sustain a unique portfolio of translational research in neuroscience and mental health research. Our work drives scientific excellence, innovation in patient care, and the training of the next generation of leaders. 

Underpinning this mission is a commitment to fostering the highest standards of scientific integrity and to maintaining a collegial, diverse and inclusive working environment. 

The Department comprises three divisions: 

• Neurology &²Ô»å²¹²õ³ó; conducts ground-breaking laboratory research and translates it to the bedside for the benefit of patients. 
• Neuroscience &²Ô»å²¹²õ³ó; investigates the mechanisms of neurodegeneration and neuroinflammation behind many neurological disorders. It is home to the Brain Tumour 91ÌÒÉ« Centre of Excellence and hosts the Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson's Tissue Bank, a national collection of central nervous system (CNS) tissue samples donated by individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinson's disease and related neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative conditions. 
• Psychiatry  – carries out pioneering research to improve the prevention, assessment and treatment of psychiatric disorders, and includes the pioneering Centre for Psychedelic 91ÌÒÉ«. 

Spanning all three divisions, the Department leads the multidisciplinary UK Dementia 91ÌÒÉ« Institute at 91ÌÒɫ and the UK DRI Care 91ÌÒÉ« and Technology Centre at 91ÌÒÉ«. 

We aim to nurture the next generation of scientists. We train postgraduates through a broad portfolio of study options, including the MRes Experimental Neuroscience a²Ô»å MSc Translational Neuroscience programmes, while welcoming applications from talented PhD candidates from around the world.
