This course will cover advanced aspects of allergic diseases in childhood, from the mechanisms underlying the ‘atopic march’ to difficult clinical scenarios such as multisystem allergic disease, immunodeficiency, adolescent transition and psychological or safeguarding issues. Practical workshops on infant weaning, food challenges and immunotherapy will be available.

Teaching delivery format
This course has been devised in an attractive and innovative format combining asynchronous materials (e.g. pre-recorded sessions, reading lists and web-based resources) as well as live interactive sessions. A range of formats will be used to encourage active learning, including ‘meet the expert question & answer’ sessions, focused discussions, interactive case-based sessions as well as group work. Practical ‘hands-on’ elements will be covered on the optional on campus half day.

A ‘course launch webinar’ will be held in April for registered participants to introduce the course and help you get organised to maximize your learning experience.

This course will cover a wide range of allergic skin diseases, including atopic eczema, contact dermatitis, urticarias, hereditary and acquired angioedemas, photodermatoses and drug allergies. The underlying mechanisms, diagnostic work-up and advanced management will be discussed. Challenging topics such as the role of food allergy in eczema, refractory urticaria and mastocytosis will be addressed. The course will be delivered by experts and world leading international academics.

Complexity Science Symposium

Title: The Holonomy Representation of Projective Structures on Compact Riemann Surfaces

Speaker: Carmine Imbriani (Pavia)

Abstract: Complex projective structures provide a compelling example of (G,X)-structures on surfaces, serving as a bridge between classical uniformization theory and modern representation theory. This seminar explores the geometric and algebraic properties of these structures, with a primary focus on the holonomy map hol from the space of projective structures P(S) to the PSL(2, C)-character variety of the fundamental group \pi_1(S).

While the holonomy map is a general construction that is always open, its behavior in the context of projective structures is particularly rich: it is known to be a local homeomorphism but, notably, it fails to be globally injective due to phenomena such as grafting. In the final part of the talk, we will discuss a landmark result by R.C. Gunning, which provides a criterion for the injectivity of the holonomy map. By restricting the domain to a special class of projective structures, we will show how it is possible to recover a unique correspondence between projective structures and their associated representations.

About Christian Meditation

Christianity has a long and rich history of meditation and contemplative prayer. These ancient Christian traditions have their roots in the monasteries of the desert hermits of the second century. Jesus himself often prayed in times of stillness and solitude. Many of these long established practices are now shared by Christians from Protestant, Catholic, and Orthodox Churches. We offer a range of meditations practices including:

silence and stillness
slow reading of scripture (Lectio Divina)
using imagination to encounter scripture (Ignatian Contemplation)
meditation review of the day or a project
Centering prayer
using experience and emotions in prayer
discernment when making changes in life

These practices also have many resonances with the contemporary practice of Mindfulness meditation.‌

The chromosphere radiates energy through plasma-neutral collisions, creating an isothermal layer with a sharp ionization transition that drives upward ionized flux. Continuous solar winds arise from coronal heating and transition-region processes, with Parker’s solution defining the boundary between subsonic and supersonic flows rather than explaining all supersonic winds.

A Spatial Localizer for Electrons in Insulators

Wladimir Benalcazar, Emory University

The location of electrons governs phenomena ranging from chemical bonding and electric polarization to the topological classification of band insulators and the emergence of correlated states in quantum matter. While a prescription exists for finding local state representations of electrons in one-dimensional insulators, no comparably general theory exists in higher dimensions. Here, we introduce a general framework for locating electrons in insulators in two and three dimensions, based on the spectral properties of quantum-mechanical operators that we term Spatial Localizers. This framework naturally extends the notion of Wannier centers to insulators with boundaries, defects, and disorder, which we use to establish a position-space formulation of the bulk-defect correspondence for electronic charge. This framework also yields maximally localized electronic states. As two representative examples, we show that these states reduce to maximally localized Wannier functions in atomic insulators, whereas in Chern insulators they form coherent states that mirror the coherent-state structure of Landau levels in the quantum Hall effect.

Talk Title: Intraoperative Mapping: From Mechanistic Insight to Clinical Impact

Introduction

Prof. Dr. Natasja MS de Groot, FEHRA works as senior cardiologist-electrophysiologist. She is appointed as full-time professor in the Erasmus Medical Center and the Technical University in Delft. She is also a Medical Delta Professor. She is experienced in device implantations and catheter ablation procedures with a variety of mapping/ablation technologies including remote magnetic/robotic navigation and a diversity of electro-anatomical mapping techniques. Main foci of her clinical work include: 1) catheter ablation of complex tachyarrhythmias such as post-operative tachyarrhythmias in patients with congenital heart disease, 2) catheter ablation in paediatric patients.

Field(s) of expertise

Her research projects are aimed at unravelling the pathophysiology of complex cardiac tachyarrhythmias, developing and testing developing novel diagnostic tools (in close collaboration with TU Delft) and therapies for cardiac arrhythmias. Main research topics are high resolution mapping studies of cardiac arrhythmias in particular atrial fibrillation, mechanisms of (post-operative) atrial fibrillation, dysrhythmias in patients with congenital heart disease and neuromodulation of atrial fibrillation. For this purpose, she has developed a unique way of recording and processing cardiac signals to perform mapping procedures.

Her innovative scientific contributions include:

discovery of novel mechanisms underlying persistence of atrial fibrillation
introduction endovascular mapping approach guiding ablative therapy of atrial tachyarrhythmias in patients with congenital heart disease
development of a novel, intra- operative epicardial mapping approach.
discovery of the role of Bachmann’s bundle in development of atrial tachyarrhythmias
performed worldwide the first high resolution mapping studies in pediatric patient
discovery conduction properties in pediatric patients with congenital heart disease

Mindfulness can help you stay calm, focused, and better manage the pressures of life. Everyone can benefit from Mindfulness, but you might find it especially helpful if you are:

You can practise Mindfulness anywhere — on your own, in a group session, or one-to-one.

The Chaplaincy provides regular sessions on meditation and Mindfulness, which many students find helpful in managing stress. You can also contact the Chaplains if you’d like a one-to-one conversation about your meditation or Mindfulness practice, or if you have any questions.

On the Cosmological Constant and Dark Energy in String Theory

Why doesn’t the vacuum energy, implied by QFT and the Standard Model of Particle Physics, curve spacetime catastrophically towards an exponentially rapid expansion or collapse? Supersymmetry is known to ameliorate this long-standing Cosmological Constant Problem, but only down to the scale set by the susy-breaking mass splittings; at least ~TeV for the visible sector. String theory offers new possibilities. I will describe how the symmetries and dynamics of string theory can lead to a suppression of the one-loop vacuum energy down to the observed scale of Dark Energy. I will illustrate these ideas with an explicit string construction, based on non-supersymmetric string theory, and discuss the remaining opportunities and challenges for theory and observation.
