In a collisionless shock, collective fields provide complex nonlinear and kinetic interactions that can support collisionless/anomalous heating mechanisms in the plasma. Consequently, there is no generally accepted theory of particle energy partitioning and heating in collisionless shocks. Electron and ion temperatures are obtained by spacecraft measurement of planetary bow-shocks and analysis supernova remnant spectra exhibit large statistical variance of the inferred energy partition, and particle-in-cell simulations often cannot reproduce electron-ion temperature ratios measured in nature. Laboratory experiments offer a complementary approach to satellite measurements and astronomical observations.

In this talk, I will present results from magnetized collisionless shock laboratory experiments at conditions relevant to planetary bow-shocks (MA~ 8, 飦 ~ 3). We report the first laboratory observation of fully developed shocks (脳3.6 compression ratio and a downstream region decoupled from the piston). The data indicate the presence of a foot ahead of the density discontinuity, where both electrons and ions exhibit significant super-adiabatic heating. Surprisingly, the downstream exhibits significant super-adiabatic heating of both species with electrons and ions in thermal equipartition, with an order-unity electron-ion downstream temperature ratio Te/Ti ~ 0.8. This temperature ratio is inconsistent with a combination of adiabatic compression and electron-ion collisional equilibration; thus, it provides the first laboratory evidence of collisionless anomalous heating in a fully developed perpendicular magnetized collisionless shock [1].

Title: Assimilating phytoplankton carbon in marine ecosystem modelling

Speaker: Yumeng Chen (Reading)

Title: Assimilating phytoplankton carbon in marine ecosystem modelling

Abstract:

The state of the marine ecosystem can be estimated by combining numerical models and satellite observations through data assimilation (DA). Satellite products representing phytoplankton chlorophyll, derived from ocean colour observations, are widely used in operational marine ecosystem prediction as a proxy for phytoplankton biomass. However, phytoplankton carbon products, although long available, are not yet widely assimilated. A new phytoplankton carbon product from the ESA-funded BICEP project has recently been derived through an alternative processing of ocean colour, providing complementary information on phytoplankton biomass to chlorophyll alone. We therefore expect that assimilating phytoplankton carbon, especially together with chlorophyll, can provide a more balanced update to the marine ecosystem state.

In this talk, I will present the development of a global ensemble DA system based on the coupled ocean鈥揵iogeochemistry model NEMO-MEDUSA and the Parallel Data Assimilation Framework (PDAF). PDAF provides a flexible and efficient infrastructure for implementing ensemble-based DA, allowing us to assimilate new biogeochemical variables and evaluate time-dependent forecast uncertainty in a global marine ecosystem model. In addition, we will introduce a newly developed diagnostic tool that is used to quantify the uncertainties in observation and forecast errors. We will demonstrate its application to the errors of the new carbon product and their correlations with errors in the chlorophyll products. The results highlight both the potential value of phytoplankton carbon assimilation and the importance of flexible ensemble DA frameworks for developing future marine ecosystem prediction systems.
/events/211340/spc-seminar-climate-yumeng-chen-reading/2113402026-07-02T08:17:29+01:002026-07-21T11:30:00+01:002026-07-21T12:30:00+01:002026-07-09T16:28:25+01:00Seminar91桃色711c, Huxley Building, South Kensington Campus, 91桃色, London, SW7 2AZ, United Kingdom/assets/website/images/placeholder/events/events-placeholder_3_eventpanel2018_x05.jpg/assets/website/images/placeholder/events/events-placeholder_3_eventpanel2018_x1.jpg/assets/website/images/placeholder/events/events-placeholder_3_eventpanel2018_x2.jpgHuxley Building, South Kensington CampusOpenBiomathematics seminar 鈥 Tara Chari (Schmidt Center, Broad Institute)Biomathematics seminar - Tara Chari (Schmidt Center, Broad Institute)
RNA processing dynamics across cell states and fates from single-cell snapshot data

聽

With single-cell genomics datasets, it is possible to assay the transcriptome in thousands to millions of cells as they undergo development, differentiation and external perturbation. These data are ripe for investigation into how regulation of RNA processing governs the myriad cell states comprising these systems. However, despite our ability to assay these states, single-cell data is sparse and noisy, a result of both innate biological features of the RNA molecules and technical effects in RNA capture and sequencing. Standard analyses often rely on heuristic application of dimensionality reductions to remove noise, and focus on mean-level (observational) changes in gene expression to define cell states.

Here we demonstrate how stochastic, biophysical models of RNA processing can be applied to snapshot single-cell data to reveal underlying mechanisms of observed gene expression patterns across heterogenous cell states. By explicitly realizing the biophysical and technical processes underlying the sparse, discrete molecular data, we can reveal altered dynamics of bursty transcription, splicing and degradation between populations of cells. We can additionally resolve heterogeneous regulation within these populations, and propose combinatorial strategies of regulation guiding these distinct fates. Together this work enables hypothesis-driven experimentation by proposing key points of transcriptional regulation underlying higher-level changes in gene expression and noise.
/events/211499/biomathematics-seminar-tara-chari-schmidt-center-broad-institute/2114992026-07-10T10:14:58+01:002026-07-21T13:00:00+01:002026-07-21T14:00:00+01:002026-07-10T10:14:58+01:00Seminar91桃色139, Huxley Building, South Kensington Campus, 91桃色, London, SW7 2AZ, United Kingdom/assets/website/images/placeholder/events/events-placeholder_1_eventpanel2018_x05.jpg/assets/website/images/placeholder/events/events-placeholder_1_eventpanel2018_x1.jpg/assets/website/images/placeholder/events/events-placeholder_1_eventpanel2018_x2.jpgHuxley Building, South Kensington CampusOpenSound BathJoin us for this deeply immersive, meditative experience where participants are 鈥渂athed鈥 in sound waves produced by therapeutic instruments.
Join us for this deeply immersive, meditative experience where participants are 鈥渂athed鈥 in sound waves produced by therapeutic instruments.
Professor Gerard Milburn, Quantum Fellow at the UK鈥檚 NQCC, willl share his vision of how quantum computers and AI could transform science.

Galileo鈥檚 great insight was that we can learn about the world by building devices that reveal simple, reproducible phenomena. We push on the world, and the world pushes back. More than a century ago, scientists discovered that some experiments produced a startling result: the world is quantum.

Quantum theory is famously strange, yet we now understand it well enough to put it to work. Quantum technologies aim to harness and control the quantum world in ways that can make us wealthier, healthier and safer. In this talk, Professor Milburn will describe the quantum technologies that are already beginning to change our lives, including quantum computing. Looking ahead, he will explore how the combination of quantum computing and embedded artificial intelligence could create 鈥渟elf-driving laboratories鈥 that accelerate scientific discovery and open the door to technologies beyond our current imagination.

Abstract:

Recent advances in X鈥憆ay free鈥慹lectron laser (XFEL) technology have opened new opportunities to probe photoionization dynamics on attosecond timescales and to access strong鈥慺ield regimes at X鈥憆ay wavelengths that were previously experimentally inaccessible. In this talk, I will discuss two complementary classes of XFEL experiments that together illuminate the timing and mechanisms of electron emission in atoms and molecules. 聽First, I will address聽attosecond photoemission delays聽measured using circular streaking techniques, with a focus on extending ionization鈥慸elay chronoscopy from聽linearly to circularly polarized probes.聽聽I will also address the challenges of interpreting streaking delays at low photoelectron energies. 聽Second, I will present recent theoretical work exploring a聽new non鈥憄erturbative strong鈥慺ield X鈥憆ay regime, where multiphoton above鈥憈hreshold ionization (ATI) is driven by attosecond XFEL pulses. In helium, this regime produces distinct angular and spectral signatures that are clearly separated from perturbative harmonic contributions. 聽Together, these studies demonstrate how XFELs enable both聽quantitative attosecond chronoscopy聽and聽fundamental tests of strong鈥慺ield ionization physics聽at short wavelengths, establishing a foundation for future experiments in atoms and molecules.
