91��ɫ Business School has once again been recognised as one of the world’s leading providers of online business education, with its Global Online MBA ranked second globally and first in the UK in the latest Financial Times Online MBA Ranking. This year’s result is particularly notable as the ranking has expanded from 15 schools last year to 20 institutions globally.

The programme also rose to first place worldwide for salary three years after graduation, with alumni reporting an average salary of $253,733. The School retained its position as first in the world for international faculty, while the proportion of female students improved significantly, rising to sixth place globally from twelfth last year. 91��ɫ also strengthened its position in the FT’s research ranking, moving up to second place from third.

Asma Aejaz (Global Online MBA 2019) is a Diversity Advisor in Planning & Progress - Climate, Emerging Risks & Policy at Aramco based in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Previously holding positions in the Oil and Gas Industry at Shell in Canada as well as HUBCO Pakistan.

What does break the bias mean to you?

We’ve made some progress in breaking this bias. Personally, I believe that mentorships and role modelling play a critical role, and what makes a true difference is when you have champions. It’s very important to create that visibility for yourself, but it doesn’t always happen through serendipity. I’ve been lucky to have both male and female champions and mentors in my career. It’s via those networks and building credibility that we can break the bias.

How have you faced bias in the workplace?

Working in a typically male dominated industry, gender bias definitely exists. Interesting though, when I started working, it was also a bias in terms of in age. Often, I was much younger than my colleagues at the table and sometimes the only woman in a room with all men. In comparison to my male counterparts, I definitely to had put in extra effort. For example, even a simple update meeting, I made sure to prepare myself. Ensure I had done all of the pre-readings and understand/ study the topics from a non-engineer perspective such that my input is backed is backed by knowledge and research.

So definitely, as a woman working in a male dominated industry, I had to put in the extra effort, I had to be on top of things, if not more. Sometimes I felt I had to reenforce my value by going above and beyond. Maybe I’ve had to go 2 extra miles in comparison to some of my male counterparts, which was great learning but I do truly hope this will change in the future. I feel the world now understands the how impetrative diversity and inclusion is in deriving true value for business and society.

How has 91��ɫ equipped you with tools to deal with gender bias?

Hands down the access to the network of fellow classmates, alumni, faculty, and case studies has been phenomenal. Having a network where I had access to people all over the world, some of my co-hort members were scientists, women in STEM, some were lawyers, and that in itself was so empowering. One of my partners in my syndicate group was a brilliant lawyer based in Greece, and the thought leadership she brought to our projects was immense. It’s access to that diverse network that enables thought leadership and the ability to comprehend divergent views.

Additionally, for our final capstone we had a Professor from Germany and she talked about her real-life business ventures. That insight, that reality of being a woman and running a business and seeing her very challenging Academic career, provided a role model in the classroom.

91��ɫ recognises the one true key challenge that women face, which is the pay inequities between genders. This is a global phenomenon, and it is consistent in all industries, whether it be Hollywood, Banking, Oil and Gas, Professional Athletes. Women are not paid equitably in comparison to their male counterparts. This is a reality. What I really appreciate is 91��ɫ understanding this and offering the Women’s Scholarship. If you compare a man and a woman starting their MBA after a few years in the workforce, irrespective of what region they represent, I can say with reasonable assurance that her male counterpart will have more in terms of financially and monetary resources. 91��ɫ offers a scholarship, to level the playing field. If academic institutions really want to increase the representation and participation of qualified women to their organisations, they need to consider the true reality of the financial inequity

Programme: Full-Time MBA, Class of 2025

Current role and organisation: AI Product Builder, OakNorth

How did 91��ɫ’s Full-Time MBA prepare you for your career, and what changed in your career trajectory because of it?

I work at a bank operating in digital lending, business banking and personal savings. My role sits at the intersection of technology, product and financial services, where I help build and scale AI-driven solutions.

The Full-Time MBA was a great sandbox where I could experiment with strategy, marketing and product-focused work beyond my engineering background. Group projects such as analysing PUMA’s strategy and conducting a marketing audit on Lime bikes closely mirror what I do in my day-to-day work now.

My work also involves cross-functional collaboration with legal, compliance and finance operations teams internationally, which directly reflects the holistic perspective I gained during the MBA.

Structured thinking and academic frameworks aside, the programme was important for me to build the confidence to transition to a strategy and product role. Without the MBA, I would likely have continued in software development, with limited exposure to business strategy or product leadership.

What advice would you give students and recent graduates on choosing a career path and entering the job market?

I had to be iterative, so from my experience I would recommend using internships, projects and coursework to test what genuinely interests you rather than over-planning upfront. And of course, be adaptable, as roles today often sit at the intersection of multiple domains, so leaning into interdisciplinary skills can be a major advantage.

What are the most important opportunities at 91��ɫ that current MBA students should make sure they don’t miss?

For me, I would say that the alumni mentorship programmes are an invaluable part of the MBA experience. Having mentors across different stages of their careers was key to knowing what was going on in the industry and keeping my finger on current trends.

Another opportunity to get involved in is the Careers Fairs. They’re busy days and a lot of students attend, but make sure to throw yourself into the experience as it’s a great way to initiate contact with recruiters. What’s really key is how you follow up and build the relationship afterwards.

How have you stayed connected with 91��ɫ since graduating, and why is this so valuable for your ongoing career?

My brilliant Career Consultant and mentors have been a strong support system for me post-graduation and helped me to navigate the job market and interviews. I would say that the real value of an MBA lies in the network – with your cohort as well as the Careers support. These relationships can open doors to opportunities, insights and long-term career growth if you put the effort into maintaining them.

Current role and organisation: Project Leader, Boston Consulting Group (BCG)

How does your current work relate to your MBA studies at 91��ɫ?

The electives that I chose link very closely with my current role. This includes a broader understanding from the Strategy module and Capstone Consulting Experience, which allowed me to work with team mates to solve a strategic problem facing a real client.

The Mergers and Acquisitions elective provided a more focused insight, with the idea of value creating transactions tying in very nicely to my BCG work in Post Merger Integrations and Carve-Outs.

How did 91��ɫ’s Weekend MBA prepare you for your career, and what changed in your career trajectory because of it?

I think the single biggest thing that 91��ɫ Business School did for my career was allow me to demonstrate how I was investing in my professional development in a meaningful way. I started 91��ɫ when I was leaving the army and studying here gave me a great foundation in business understanding while also allowing me to translate my previous experience into broader evidence based on my competencies. I am not sure I would have landed my job at BCG had I not done the MBA.

What is one practical step someone who has just graduated can take to boost their career prospects?

A practical step you can take is to start talking to everyone and anyone in the industry you’re interested in exploring to boost your understanding on where to start and how to succeed in entering the job market.

Programme: Full-Time MBA, Class of 2023

Current role and organisation: Senior Solutions Engineer, Sweep

How does your current work relate to your MBA studies at 91��ɫ?

I work at a climate tech scale-up focused on carbon accounting and ESG reporting, helping companies navigate sustainability reporting requirements. My role combines technical expertise with customer engagement, blending focused analysis with teaching and presenting.

I applied for an MBA because I wanted to transition from my data analyst position in the publishing industry into climate tech and sustainability. I chose 91��ɫ Business School because of its connections with the Grantham Institute and the number of elective modules focused on sustainability. I made the most of them, taking every sustainability focused elective available, and that academic grounding gave me the vocabulary, frameworks and credibility I needed to speak the language of sustainability professionals. This is what got me through the door and landed me the role. I’ve been learning on the job ever since.

How did 91��ɫ’s Full-Time MBA prepare you for your career, and what changed in your career trajectory because of it?

Before my MBA, I was applying for sustainability roles as an analyst and I didn’t get a single interview. Studying at 91��ɫ gave me the industry knowledge I needed to succeed in the move I was trying to make on my own. Today, when I'm speaking with ESG teams about their reporting obligations, I have industry context drawn from so many different case studies across the MBA, as well as a real understanding of the specific frameworks and challenges in sustainability. I draw on my knowledge from the Full-Time MBA every single day.

Electives like the Entrepreneurial Journey and Wicked Problems, Systems Dynamics and Entrepreneurial Innovation taught me that some of my strengths lie in pitching and presenting, even winning a prize for a presentation – a real highlight on the programme. This realisation changed the kinds of roles I was considering applying for and ultimately landed me in my current role that I hold today, where I present to sustainability leaders daily.

What advice would you give to students and recent graduates?

My biggest piece of advice is to take the time to understand how the skills and experience built through both the MBA and in previous jobs can intersect with the industry you want to enter and build your story from there.

During my MBA, through networking, events and honest conversations with people already working in the sustainability space, I came to realise that my data analytics background was an asset – a genuine differentiator. As an industry full of data challenges, my experience meant that I could bring something real and immediately useful to the table. The market for scale-ups building new sustainability technologies was, and still is, welcoming of people who can work with data intelligently.

As soon as I understood that, I re-framed how I presented myself, highlighting why the skills from my work history on top of the foundational knowledge gained from the MBA were valuable. In doing this, I became a really strong candidate in the spaces I was looking for.

What is one practical step someone who has just graduated can take to boost their career prospects immediately?

Use AI tools to generate ideas or to structure your thinking, or use it to ensure your CV is error free, but use it carefully. As someone who has hired a lot of people since finishing my MBA, I can confirm that it is immediately obvious when a CV or interview prep has been generated by AI.

Today, the candidates who feel like real people on the page are the ones who stand out. And that is becoming much rarer, which means it is a real competitive advantage.

What are the most important opportunities at 91��ɫ that current MBA students should make sure they don't miss?

91��ɫ offers an enormous range of opportunities: sports clubs, volunteering, investment and finance clubs, entrepreneurship programmes, competitions and global experiences. If something piques your curiosity, then go for it. The MBA is a rare gift of time – a protected space to experiment and discover where you actually shine.

How did 91��ɫ’s Global Online MBA prepare you for your career, and what changed in your career trajectory because of it?

The Global Online MBA at 91��ɫ Business School has had a profound impact on both my career trajectory and confidence as a leader. I started the programme as a strong technical and governance expert in data and technology. 91��ɫ has helped me to broaden my perspective globally and strategically, and now I can position myself not just as a specialist, but as someone capable of influencing outcomes across a business.

What advice would you give to students and recent graduates?

My advice would be to consider your early career as a winding path, rather than a straight ladder. The goal should not just be about salary or title, but about learning velocity, gaining exposure and building relationships.

Adaptability, communication and leadership are often key differentiators. I’m finding that employers increasingly value individuals who can connect data with business outcomes, collaborate across cultures and lead through uncertainty.

For those still studying, don’t underestimate the power of extracurricular leadership. Some of my biggest growth moments came from participating in the Student Staff Committee, the Dean’s Student Advisory Council and other voluntary leadership and community roles. Through these, I learnt about stakeholder management, resilience and teamwork in practical ways.

What is one practical step someone who has just graduated can take to boost their career prospects immediately?

One practical step a new graduate can take is to intentionally build their professional narrative online, particularly on platforms like LinkedIn. Some of my own posts around leadership, diversity, governance and community impact ended up creating opportunities, conversations and connections I never anticipated. In many cases, opportunities come from not just what you know, but from those who see what you care about.

What are the most important opportunities at 91��ɫ that current MBA students should make sure they don't miss?

I would strongly encourage students to maximise 91��ɫ’s broader ecosystem, particularly in departments specialising in technology and science. Studying at a university where business students can easily interact with engineers, scientists, technologists and mathematicians creates a uniquely future-focused environment. As aspiring innovators and entrepreneurs, this collaboration is vital.

How have you stayed connected with 91��ɫ since graduating, and why is this so valuable for your ongoing career?

Since graduating, I’ve assisted with MBA recruitment, mentored current MBA students and collaborated with fellow alumni.

Despite living on the other side of the world in Australia, these connections have been incredibly valuable in a global and interdisciplinary business world. Some of the conversations and friendships I’ve built during my MBA continue to influence how I think about leadership, innovation and impact today.

For International Women’s Day 2025, we interviewed Global Online MBA alumnus Yetunde Ibe about her career.

Can you give us a brief overview of your career journey to date?

I spent the first 13 years of my career in the US. I started as a corporate finance analyst at Aerotek. Three years later, I joined Deloitte, managing project financials and leading finance teams supporting clients such as the World Bank, Capital One, and CVS, which developed my skills in strategic execution, operational excellence, and talent development.

This foundation paved the way for future leadership roles at Unilever, including Financial Controller for the Nigerian listed business and Africa Personal Care category Head of Finance. At BAT, I served as the Finance Director, West African market before transitioning to the UK Headquarters, where I have held multiple roles such as Regional Commercial Finance Controller for Canada, LATAM, and Sub Saharan Africa, and Group Investor Relations.

Currently, I serve as the Global Head of Commercial Finance, Digital Business Solutions (DBS) at BAT. Our DBS is the engine that keeps the lights on, integrating technology capability with our commercial strategy. It also drives efficiencies by leveraging shared service capabilities across the business. My remit involves working with my team to manage and support the function with investment prioritisation and resource allocation. I also ensure my team receives adequate support in terms of capacity building and capability development, fostering an environment that promotes quality performance while being supportive, collaborative, and inclusive in our delivery approach.

I hold an undergraduate degree in Economics with Finance from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County in the US, and recently graduated from 91��ɫ Business School.

What does your day-to-day look like in your current role? What learnings from your MBA have you brought to your job?

My typical day involves working with my team to provide financial insights and give visibility on financial performance, helping to shape business decisions. I collaborate with various stakeholders to unlock solutions that can help us achieve our business objectives and I’m currently involved in two major transformation projects. In addition, I coach, mentor, and act as the sounding board for my team, guiding them through scenarios with their business partners. My core principle regardless of the day or situation is a solution-driven approach, focusing on doing the right thing and delivering sustainable operational efficiencies and continuous improvement.

As a senior finance professional with more than two decades working for multinational organizations across three continents, the decision to embark on a journey that takes me back to the classroom in pursuit of an MBA was not an easy one. However, when I thought about my next 5 years, I strongly believed that an academic setting that allowed me the freedom to learn, interact with people of similar mindsets, share ideas and research within an MBA program would be the right bridge to where I envisioned my future vision of scaling my all-female support platform into a full-fledged global foundation.

I’ve also benefited from 91��ɫ's alumni support, particularly the Women Entrepreneurial Innovation hub, where I've met women leading impressive initiatives.

As we mark International Women’s Day, how can we encourage more women to pursue a career in finance?

A career in Finance offers a diverse career path from investment banking to in-house finance management. As an in-house finance professional, you gain a comprehensive understanding of how a business is managed, developing as a commercial, operational, and strategic leader. You get to collaborate across departments to drive significant impact and influence decisions that foster growth and innovation. The skills acquired are transferable across industries and even roles. Finance roles are very valuable and respected within organisations and compensation can be quite rewarding. Many women are thriving and excelling in leadership including FTSE 100 and Fortune 500 CFO roles.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing women entering the finance industry?

The finance industry has traditionally been seen as male dominated for various reasons, including technical demands and long hours which can impact work life balance. However, with the focus on Diversity & Inclusion, organisations have created an enabling environment that provide women with equitable opportunities. This shift has led to a higher percentage of women in Finance, including leadership roles. Ongoing support is needed to help more women enter and remain in finance. Continued backing will strengthen the pipeline and make finance appealing to women.

Can you tell us more about any projects and initiatives you have worked on to help address inequalities and uplift women?

I mentioned my magic wand at the beginning…When I turned 40, I recognized the fact that I did not want my story to just be about the organizations. Reflecting on my challenges during tough times, I became passionate about championing initiatives that can help the next woman navigate the challenge of trying to balance it all.

I am passionate about paving an easier path for the woman of the future which is why I mentor a diverse group of women. As a personal project, I founded WeGrow and WeVest, two non-for-profit platforms dedicated to women's development and financial advancement. Since its inception in 2021, the all-women member group has been able to save close to $100k by simply adopting the simple, consistent concept of “little drops of water make a mighty ocean”. I get a lot of thank you but in reality, I am the one benefiting from the personal sense of purpose it gives me

Are there any (female) role models who have inspired you professionally (or personally)?

Every woman who wakes up every day and strives to be a better version of themself is an inspiration

What drew you to study at 91��ɫ?

The flexibility of completing the program while still fully employed, 91��ɫ’s reputation, its convenient location, and lastly, the associated cost.

You recently spoke at an alumni panel. What does it mean for you to still keep that connection with 91��ɫ and give back your time to current students?

I see it as another opportunity to give back, helping others as they navigate this journey.

What advice would you give to someone looking to follow a similar career path?

Your career is a journey, not a race. Embrace learning and new experiences. Take on challenges and soak in as much as you can in each role. Build an authentic network and most importantly, live in the moment and be kind to others and yourself.

Mangala Prasetia , a Global Online MBA student, reflects on his experience of the Capstone module. The Capstone takes place over a seven-day period across our South Kensington and White City campuses. Alongside a series of lectures on innovation, design and entrepreneurship, Mangala and his classmates analysed the innovative needs of a large multinational and developed a business case to help the company grow.

Earlier this month, my Global Online MBA cohort gathered in London from all over the world to complete the Capstone module, a pivotal part of our MBA journey designed to integrate everything we have learnt over the past two years. Over an intense seven-day period, our team logged almost 100 hours of brainstorming, planning, interviewing, and refining our ideas.

Pre-Capstone week

In the lead-up to the Capstone, our first task was to form groups of up to six people, consider several problem statements faced by our companies, and conceive a corresponding innovative solution that was both feasible and socially impactful. Forming the group was straightforward for me, as I had the opportunity to reunite with my first-year syndicate group members: Padma, Brandon, Sebastian, James, and Yuko. We had an excellent group dynamic and agreed to put our minds together for the Capstone week (and of course go out and hit the town!).

Day 1

Arriving on Sunday at Scale Space, located in 91��ɫ’s White City campus, after a 30+ hour journey (not to mention the time difference and jet lag!) from Australia was a challenging start to the week. However, seeing everyone from our cohort once again after a year-long hiatus was truly a highlight, and I had the opportunity to catch up with my peers from around the world over lunch and an opening ceremony of sorts.

Day 1 was also the day we settled on a project. Our group chose to enhance WHILL’s “mobility for all” mission. WHILL is known for its innovative mobility devices (particularly electric wheelchairs) designed to improve the lives of people with mobility challenges. Our proposed solution was to build on their existing technology to create a solution that would be even more inclusive and accessible.

Day 3

One of the most demanding aspects of the week was the sheer volume of work and the need for constant iteration. Receiving feedback from multiple coaches was a challenge, as we had to consider various aspects of our solution and balance the technical feasibility, financial costs, and meaningful social impact. In fact, to quote one of our professors, the job of the coaches was “to confuse you!” However, what stood out most was the camaraderie within our group. Our familiarity (having worked together for most of 2022-23) really helped us get through the continuous pivots we had to make. More importantly, we also had a “brainfood” sharing session, where we shared snacks from around the world: Australian biscuits, Swiss chocolates, Singaporean crispy skins, Japanese Kit Kats, and British flapjacks. These snacks encouraged us to take much-needed breaks and helped us bond even more (until the snacks mysteriously disappeared one night!).

Day 5

After several days of intense preparation for our pitch, we were rewarded with a cohort social at a nearby pub. We were treated to plenty of food and drinks and had the opportunity to unwind and connect with peers outside of our Capstone groups. Through this, we had an opportunity to listen to what other groups had been working on, and in some instances, were able to exchange ideas and offer insights. The diverse backgrounds of the cohort meant that we could leverage the expertise of medical professionals, frequent flyers, and other professionals in testing the viability of our solution, and vice versa.

Day 7

The week culminated in pitching our solution to an esteemed (and intriguing!) panel of judges comprising a former princess, a former United Nations representative, and a senior employee from a major video game company. It was a nerve-wracking yet exhilarating experience as our team conducted multiple dress rehearsals and prepared for a gruelling question and answer segment. Given we were the first group to present, expectations were sky-high – but we succeeded in the end. We received insightful feedback from the panel, which was invaluable for refining our approach as we put together our final slide deck for submission.

The Global Online MBA Capstone was undoubtedly one of the most intense weeks of my life, but also one of the most rewarding. I learnt what it means to be truly resilient in an academic sense and appreciated the value of diverse perspectives as our cohort collaborated across all our different projects. The real-world challenges we all tried to solve did test our limits, and there were certainly more than a handful of instances where we all needed to take a breather. However, this experience just demonstrates the passion and high calibre of 91��ɫ students, with whom I have had the privilege to work. A special thank you to the 91��ɫ Business School staff who made this week possible – it was truly a fantastic opportunity to make use of the facilities across the South Kensington and White City campuses.

How did it feel when you found out you’d secured this scholarship?

I was absolutely delighted when I learned I had secured the Women’s Scholarship. I have been planning to pursue an MBA at 91��ɫ Business School for several years now and so, when I discovered that not only had I secured my place on the course but had also been awarded this scholarship, I felt grateful and truly excited to start on this new journey.

What motivated you to apply for this scholarship at 91��ɫ Business School?

I initially qualified as a lawyer and then transitioned to a commercial role in the aviation industry; both the legal and aviation industries are still some way off achieving parity of representation for women at senior levels and so, throughout my career, I have been keen to explore how best to attract and retain female talent within these industries. When it came to applying for my MBA at 91��ɫ Business School, I was keen to continue my commitment to women’s issues and I felt the Women’s Scholarship was the perfect way to advance that aspiration.

What does this scholarship mean to you in terms of your academic and personal goals?

This scholarship has boosted my opportunity to commence my journey in the world of business academia, which I believe will provide me with a sound basis of understanding across a broad gamut of business topics. This I see as key to my future success in a commercial role. On a personal level, the scholarship has enabled me to realise my ambition of pursuing a truly global MBA programme with a cohort that is diverse in terms of both location and business background. It has also given me the opportunity to attend a world class university that puts the student at the centre of the academic experience.

What advice would you give to students who are aspiring to earn a scholarship?

Reflect on your skills and experience and apply for the scholarships where you feel you have the best chance of success and that you believe reflect your values. Whilst some of the scholarships are more general in nature, others have a specific focus (e.g. leadership, diversity etc.) and so, I would encourage all students to consider what is the best fit for them. As scholarships are typically awarded early in the process, my advice to future students would be to apply for your course at 91��ɫ Business School as early as possible.

The 91��ɫ Global Online MBA Women’s Scholarships are awarded to women showing exceptional academic achievement and professional excellence, as well as a commitment to supporting women in business.

How did it feel when you found out you’d secured the 91��ɫ Women’s Scholarship?

I was extremely excited and honoured to have been selected for this prestigious award at such an acclaimed institution! I felt empowered to pursue my dream and to be part of this amazing community of women leaders at the 91��ɫ Business School during my time as a student and beyond.

What motivated you to apply for this scholarship at 91��ɫ Business School?

In addition to providing financial support, scholarships offer an excellent opportunity to network with high-achieving colleagues and enhance one's competitive profile. Personally, I was particularly interested in the 91��ɫ Women's Scholarship. This interest arises from my background in humanitarian work with UN Women in New York during the emergence of the MeToo movement where I met many influential businesswomen who are committed to women's empowerment. Additionally, my experience working with Zaha Hadid, a highly influential female architect in a predominantly male-dominated industry, further fuelled my advocating for more women in leadership and interest in this scholarship.

To increase your chances, it is important to apply early and dedicate enough time to prepare.

What does this scholarship mean to you in terms of your academic and personal goals?

As I pursue my MBA while working and facing the challenges of being a new mother, I represent a significant portion of applicants who are highly passionate about advancing their careers. However, it would have been impossible for me to be here without the financial support of the scholarship. Studying the Global Online MBA programme will equip me with the knowledge and skills I need to achieve my goals of becoming a leader in the built environment design, technology, and real estate development sectors

What advice would you give to students who are aspiring to earn a scholarship?

To increase your chances, it is important to apply early and dedicate enough time to prepare. Consider the full range of your skills and interests to effectively advocate for your candidacy. Engaging in activities outside of work is a great way to demonstrate leadership skills and personal interests beyond what you can achieve within your company or organisation.

We are pleased to present the Dean's Impact Scholarship to individuals who showcase accomplishments and influence in five key areas, detailed in this blog. Daniel Rubio Sanchez, a Global Online MBA student shares his experience securing the Dean's Impact Scholarship, delving into its personal significance and offering practical advice for prospective students.

Receiving the Dean's Impact Scholarship

I received the Dean's Impact Award (Technology and Innovation). It’s a scholarship meant to recognise candidates who demonstrate the biggest impact and achievement in any of the following five key areas: 

Entrepreneurship 
Technology and Innovation 
Sustainability 
Social Impact 
Leadership

It is an application-based process, so you must really reflect on what your biggest strengths are and make sure they are clear to your reviewers during a short 3-minute video.  

Finding out I had secured this scholarship

I remember I learnt about the award on a Friday morning right before going to work. I was jubilant and excited about the opportunity and what this meant for me. I probably awoke half of my neighbours with my loud morning celebration. It was the time I realised I was going to be an 91��ɫ student. 

My motivations for applying

I would have not had any of the opportunities I enjoy today if it were not for my parents. They have always seen the value of education to create future opportunities for me. When I was younger, I did not always understand it but now I see why they made such a big effort to help me get the best possible education.  

I have supported my education with scholarships since I started my undergraduate degree. My family could simply not afford the cost of my university education, so I worked hard to get good grades during my last years of high school. Due to that effort, I was able to receive a merit-based scholarship from my university since my first year. A year later, I also received an academic excellence scholarship from the Spanish government and additional support from the European Union (EU) for my Erasmus work experiences abroad. 

I believe going through those competitive processes made me more aware of the value of being awarded a scholarship by 91��ɫ. In a way, receiving the scholarship helped me move on from the imposter syndrome and see that I was ready for the challenge.  

What the scholarship means to me

The Dean's Impact Award has opened the opportunity of taking on a part-time MBA while working full-time for me. It is not an easy decision, but it certainly helps to take the leap and believe in yourself. If you think about it, 91��ɫ Business School is not just offering you a place in one of their top programmes, but also funding to support you along the way.  

The scholarship has also already been a great avenue to connect with other 91��ɫ Business School students from other MSc and MBA programmes.

For example, during our Induction Week the School organised a breakfast on campus for us to get to know each other. I am sure there will be plenty of opportunities to learn more about their experiences, careers, and ambitions.  

My advice to those aspiring to earn a scholarship

Firstly, make sure you apply. I almost made the mistake of not submitting my application because I thought there was no way I would get selected. 

Secondly, take the time to really understand your strengths as an applicant and what might have convinced 91��ɫ to offer you a place in the programme in the first place. You might be an entrepreneur, or someone who has made a significant impact on sustainability. Double down on that impact and connect it to a specific subcategory for the Dean's Impact Award.  

Finally, rehearse and rehearse until you make sure the main points (3-4 maximum) of your application come across clearly in the video assessment. Think about the kind of applicants the programme will get by reviewing the class profile and what makes you stand out. Imagine yourself being part of the selection committee, build a strong personal story that provides a common thread for your application and make it hard for them not to choose you.
